Why should I use a denture adhesive?

Patients who are used to wearing dentures may sometimes need denture adhesives to keep the denture securely in its place. When the patient uses dentures over a period of time, it is normal that some amount of supporting bone will resorb. This may result in the dentures becoming slightly loose. This minor condition can be resolved by using a small amount of denture adhesive at the top and bottom. This enables the dentures to remain firmly in place, and the patient can bite and chew comfortably without the risk of the dentures coming off.

Denture adhesives may also be useful for special occasions when the patient has to go for a social gathering or an important meeting. That is the time when the patient may be extra concerned about the firmness of the dentures. A slight application of the adhesive can keep the patient comfortable through such a situation. It allows the patient to talk and eat naturally without a nagging worry of the dentures getting loose in the midst of a formal gathering.

However, it is important to understand that denture adhesive is only a support tool for specific situations. If the patient’s dentures are loose or ill-fitting by design, or there is substantial bone loss that has made the dentures loose, it is advisable to see your dentist for a solution. The patient must not use denture adhesive indiscriminately in such a condition. An excessive use may result in damage to the gums’ soft and hard tissue as well as the mouth.

There are differing views on the use of denture adhesives, but the reality lies somewhere in the middle of the extremes. If the patient is suffering from a dry mouth condition, or is taking medication for a cold, a denture adhesive may be advisable for improved denture retention. An older patient suffering from a neurological disability may also be advised to use the adhesive. So there are specific conditions and situations when the adhesive use is advisable.
