What are Dentures?
Dentures are an excellent way to replace missing teeth. They are especially useful when an entire arch, upper, lower or both, are without teeth. Using a denture, your dentist is able replace your entire dental makeup.
There are two varieties of dentures available: cosmetic and generic. Cosmetic dentures are slightly different from the generic ones. Most generic dentures are made without any consideration to the patient’s facial aesthetics. Hence, when a patient puts on the denture, the difference can be clearly seen. However, with a cosmetic denture, this issue is not present because it is carefully designed and prepared by giving due consideration to the bite, the height and width of the smile, the shape of the face, color and texture, and the tooth position. Since a cosmetic result needs to be assured, dentists take extra care in designing and preparing these dentures to fit the facial aesthetics of the patient. This procedure is very similar to placing veneers or cosmetic crowns.
Once a patient loses teeth, the corresponding bone in that area gradually resorbs, making it smaller and smaller. As a result, the bone becomes less of an anchor to hold the dentures in place. In order to alleviate this issue, patients are often advised to use an adhesive to hold the dentures firmly in place, making it easier for them to bite and chew without any worry.
Even though denture adhesives can hold the denture in place, dentists prefer to use dental implants to address denture looseness. By placing a few dental implants in a patient’s mouth, dentures can be very firmly and strongly placed permanently. As a result, patients will never have to worry about their dentures moving around. In fact, they will even be able to eat hard foods like steaks and cheeseburgers.
