Gum Disease in Knoxville: Inflamed Gums

Gum disease, or periodontal disease refers to the infection of gum tissue or the area of bone around each tooth. This infection may be localized or spread over a large area. The symptoms of gum disease include halitosis, receding gums, deep pockets between the gums and teeth, inflamed gums and bleeding gums. Note that these symptoms don’t necessarily occur simultaneously. Some of them are evident in the earlier stages of infection while others emerge at more advanced stages.

In many cases, gum disease is the result of bad oral hygiene over an extended period of time. The accumulation of dental plaque around the gum line could ultimately lead to the infection of the gum tissue. Factors such as malnutrition and certain forms of medication, as well as diseases like diabetes and HIV/ AIDS also make one more vulnerable to infection. Hormonal and systemic changes during pregnancy can make a woman more vulnerable to gum disease.

If you suspect that you may have gum disease, it is important to get diagnosed so that you can begin the appropriate course of treatment. A practicing dentist is the ideal person to examine you for gum disease. In Knoxville, you can get a comprehensive periodontal examination at Dr. Foncea’s dental practice. This examination will include x-rays, an evaluation of your bite and the measurement of the pockets around your teeth. The information collated from the exams will help us determine the degree and type of infection.

To treat gum disease, we essentially remove the infection from the affected area. In mild cases of infection, this involves general cleaning. In advanced cases, the cleaning is deeper and more focused. There are instances when cleaning has to be combined with antibiotic therapy to completely eliminate infection. Laser therapy and surgery of the infected gums can be necessary in more extreme cases.

If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us here in Knoxville. We will be glad to talk to you about treatment options for your gum disease.
