Can Gum Disease Be Reversed?

Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease affects a number of people who may ignore the early signs. These include painful gums when brushing, swollen or bleeding gums, bad breath, loose teeth, sensitive teeth, and pain when chewing. Many adults have some form of gum disease that can cause Gingivitis and bad breath, and more serious problems like periodontitis, and even tooth loss if not treated. However, there is good news! Gum disease can be reversed with proper treatment and a good plan of daily oral hygiene.

When teeth are not cleaned properly, bacteria and plaque build up. Then the bacteria and plaque can get lodged in the areas between the teeth and the gums. It only takes a tiny amount of this bacteria and plaque to form pockets of calculus or tarter between the gums and teeth. When left untreated, this can cause the teeth to become loose and the affected teeth left untreated may need to be extracted.

Depending on how serious your case of gum disease is, you may be able to have it corrected by scheduling a series of cleaning sessions with your dentist. These cleanings will remove the deep pockets of bacteria that cause this inflammation process. The time period for these cleaning should be every three months, and once the condition has cleared up, they can be cleaned every six months.

Problems with your gums can be prevented by cleaning them properly and regularly, which includes brushing and flossing. Some people may need to brush after every meal if their condition needs more attention. By keeping your teeth and gums free of bacteria and plaque, problems can be avoided. Even though it may not seem like a big thing to do, the little particles and germs build up and can cause major damage when left for a period of time. Also, remember to visit your dentist on a regular basis for checkups and professional cleanings, which will keep your smile healthy and problems can be caught early.
