Dental Bone Grafting in Knoxville, TN

Dental bone grafting restores lost jawbone due to missing teeth, trauma, or gum disease. The procedure helps maintain facial structure and creates a solid foundation for dental implants. Bone material, either from your own body or a donor source, is placed in the affected area, stimulating new bone growth. Over time, your jawbone regains its strength, making implants and other restorations possible.

Process

Consultation and Evaluation: Your dental team will assess your jawbone health using X-rays or 3D imaging. If bone loss is detected, we’ll discuss the best type of graft for your needs and whether additional procedures (like a tooth extraction) are necessary first.

Preparing for the Procedure: Depending on the complexity of your case, we may recommend sedation options for comfort. If you’re using your own bone for the graft, a separate procedure may be needed to harvest it. Otherwise, donor or synthetic material will be prepared.

Bone Grafting Procedure: We’ll numb the area and make a small incision in your gum to access the weakened bone. The grafting material is placed in the area, secured, and then covered with a membrane to promote healing. The gums are sutured, and the healing process begins.

Next Steps

Initial Healing and Recovery: Swelling and minor discomfort are normal, but most patients manage it with over-the-counter medication. A soft food diet is recommended for the first few days, and follow-up appointments will ensure proper healing.

Bone Integration and Follow-Up: It typically takes 3 to 6 months for the new bone to fuse with your jaw. During this time, we’ll monitor progress and determine when you’re ready for implants or additional dental work.

Next Steps for Dental Treatment: Once your jawbone is strong enough, we can proceed with dental implants or other restorative procedures. If additional grafting is needed, we’ll discuss the options at your follow-up appointments.

FAQ

  • Do I need a bone graft before getting dental implants?

If your jawbone isn’t strong enough to support an implant, a bone graft is often required to build up the bone structure.

  • Where does the bone for grafting come from?

The graft can come from your own body, a donor, or synthetic materials designed to encourage new bone growth.

  • Can a dental bone graft fail?

Yes, but it’s rare. Factors like smoking, poor oral hygiene, and certain medical conditions can affect healing. If a graft doesn’t integrate properly, we may need to redo the procedure. Following aftercare instructions greatly improves success rates.
