Tooth Extraction in Knoxville, TN

Tooth extractions may be necessary if a tooth is severely damaged, decayed, or causing crowding. Whether it’s a simple removal or a surgical extraction, we prioritize your comfort. We use local anesthesia to numb the area and offer nitrous oxide to keep you relaxed. Aftercare is key, and we provide instructions for a smooth recovery.

Process

Consultation and Diagnosis: Your dentist will assess your tooth through an exam and X-rays to determine if extraction is necessary. Extraction may be recommended if the tooth can’t be saved with a filling, crown, or root canal.

Numbing and Sedation (If Needed): Before the extraction, your dentist will numb the area with local anesthesia so you won’t feel pain. If you’re anxious, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available.

Tooth Removal:

  • Simple Extraction (for visible teeth): The dentist will use a tool to loosen the tooth, then remove it with forceps.
  • Surgical Extraction (for impacted or broken teeth): A small incision is made in the gum, and the tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces before removal.

Next Steps

Stopping Bleeding and Closing the Site

After the tooth is removed, the dentist will place gauze over the site to control bleeding. Stitches may be used if needed.

Aftercare Instructions: You’ll receive instructions on how to care for the extraction site, including:

  • Biting down on gauze to stop bleeding.
  • Avoiding straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing for 24 hours to prevent dry socket.
  • Using ice packs and pain medication for swelling and discomfort.
  • Eating soft foods and gradually reintroducing solid foods.

Healing and Follow-Up: Most people feel significantly better in a few days, with full gum healing in a couple weeks. Bone regrowth takes a few months. If you experience severe pain, swelling, or signs of infection, contact your dentist.
