Boost your Smile Appeal with Professional Teeth Whitening

Have you noticed that your teeth are not as white as you would like them to be? If you wish that your smile was whiter than it currently is, a teeth whitening treatment may be just what you need. Teeth whitening treatments are an incredibly popular cosmetic dental treatment offered to our patients here at Sequoyah Dental Arts. We offer both in-office and take-home whitening treatment options.

Doing teeth whitening

Dental whitening is one of the very fastest ways available for you to get whiter, brighter teeth. In as little as one treatment, you could walk away with teeth that are several shades whiter. The procedure is comfortable and safe! If you elect for our in-office option, you will sit in one of our comfortable dental chairs and watch a movie as we do all the work.

We also offer a take-home option that utilizes trays and whitening gels. The trays are crafted from models that your dentist will take of your teeth, and the treatment will take 1 to 2 weeks to provide you with the desired results.

Why Are Teeth White?

Teeth are made up of different layers, which play a role in their color. The outer layer of enamel is composed of calcium, which is white. While the color and thickness of your enamel are out of your control, how you care for your teeth is. If you do not care for your teeth as you should, the enamel can wear away, and the underlying layer of dentin can be exposed. Dentin is yellow, and as your enamel wears, it will begin to show through, resulting in teeth that appear yellowed and discolored.

Common Reasons for Tooth Discoloration

For many reasons, our teeth can turn from a beautiful, radiant white to a dingy yellow. Some of these reasons are within our control, while others are not.

Poor Dental Hygiene

While you likely are not shocked by this, one of the leading causes of tooth discoloration is poor dental hygiene. When you fail to brush and floss daily, bacteria and food will reside in your mouth. Bacteria will continue to grow and spread, and your teeth will become stained. When you combine poor oral hygiene with any other leading reason for tooth discoloration, you will likely need to come in for a teeth whitening appointment. You will walk away with a significantly whiter smile in just one simple and convenient treatment.

Tobacco Products

Tobacco products are terrible for you all around. Not a single positive thing comes from the use of smoking or smokeless tobacco products. Not only are they detrimental to your whole body and oral health, but when you use these products, your teeth will inevitably become yellowed and stained. It is best that if you currently smoke or use smokeless tobacco, you try to find a way to stop it. Even when your teeth are whitened, if you continue to use these products, your teeth will become stained again.

Food and Drink

Coffee, tea, soda, and wine are all delicious. We all indulge in these drinks here and there, but they can all do a number on your teeth regarding color. Because certain food and beverages are high in acidity, they can lead to tooth discoloration. As a rule of thumb, if it can stain your shirt, it can stain your teeth!

Aging and Genetics

This is one thing you can do nothing about, unfortunately. As we age, our tooth’s enamel slowly begins to wear down. Our tooth’s enamel plays a large part in how white they are, and when this enamel wears thin, the dentin underneath can begin to show through. Because dentin is yellow, your teeth will start to show this discoloration. You can do nothing about it, but you could come in for a teeth whitening appointment for great results!

Genetics also plays a role in the color of our teeth. Some people are born lucky with radiantly white teeth, while others, due to genetics, may not have thick enamel. What results are teeth which are not as white as others.

Some other reasons teeth can become yellowed include:

  • Illness
  • Medication
  • Physical Trauma
